Why Breed?

Breeding a Stabyhoun is a unique and awesome opportunity to contribute to the goal of preserving, protecting and promoting the health, character, appearance, and general well being of the Stabyhoun breed, as well as its natural working ability and other unique characteristics of the breed.

To that goal, breeding pairs are selected very carefully, with the advice of the Ameri-Can Stabyhoun Association (ASA) Breeder's Advisory Committee, who consults with the NVSW (the Dutch Association for Stabyhoun & Wetterhoun) on genetics, testing, health and more.   Each dog must be judged by multiple Dutch certified Stabyhoun judges on conformation and temperament with "Very Good" or "Excellent" ratings in order to be considered for breeding. Additionally, the ASA records temperament surveys of all their breeding dogs.

The stud dog that has to have a health pedigree that compliment's the dam's pedigree, limiting risks for epilepsie, elbow or hip dysplasia, and genetic heart defects which have shown up in the breed.

Given that our breed is quite rare, with roughly 7500 dogs registered worldwide, it is imperative to our breed's future to breed as many varied, healthy, well-conformed, stable dogs as we can to maintain the limited genetic pool we already have.   In 2016, the ASA had 7 litters,  with 16 males and 13 females born.  Only a few Stabijs are imported from the Netherlands each year, as well. Thanks to our association, 60% of our 228 member dogs are currently intact and potential contributors to our breed population, but not all of those will be bred for various reasons. That is why it is important to breed.  It is also why it is important  to produce the most stable, healthy pups with any breeding.  See also:  Pedigree analysis and optimisation of the breeding programme of the Markiesje and the Stabyhoun
