Fokkersdag 2019

I visited the Dutch Association for Stabij and Wetterhounen (NVSW) website today and was pleasantly reminded of a lovely day spent with dozens of dogs, dog folk, and an organization that has devoted itself in the Netherlands, and worldwide, to the Stabyhoun and Wetterhoun.

CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS of the Fokkersdag here and here; Our Ameri-Can Stabyhoun Association attended this event at the invitation of the NVSW and stayed for a summit with other Stabyhoun clubs from around the world, in an effort to continue to prioritize healthy Stabyhouns worldwide!

Fokkersdag is a "Breeder's Day"; the Association gathers pups that were born about a year ago together with their siblings and their parents to truly evaluate what that particular breeding produced. Health and conformation (body structure and adherence to the breed standard) are evaluated by Stabyhoun and Wetterhoun judges, and pups that are good candidates for breeding are noted. Data on temperament and health, as well as conformation, are paramount in assessing how the Association's breeding program is going.

I attended my first Stabyhoun's fokkersdag in October, 2015; and while I could not air cargo Intske over to the Netherlands for evaluation, I did speak with the judge and she consulted my photos and video of her movement. I also got to see Intske's siblings and observe their conformation and behavior, which is very informative. I will attend my pup Annetje's fokkersdag this June, 2020 to meet her siblings and see what this litter produced.

Fokkersdag October 2015, Zutphen, Netherlands.

We have our own version of fokkersdag in the United States - it happens at the Ameri-Can Stabyhoun Association National Specialty and at a few regional specialty event, generally every 2-3 years. This is a great time (see my post on the 2019 Specialty) and along with the fun and camaraderie, there is also the serious business of assessing how our association and our countries (USA and Canada) are doing with the Stabyhoun population we have. We host several Dutch Stabyhoun judges and each dog that is a candidate for breeding is assessed. We also have a great dog show with friendly competition for Best of Breed male and female, and within other classes. It is wonderful to see lovely dogs exhibited and recognized for their talents, be it barn hunt, canine good citizen certification, farm dog certification, or in the conformation ring.
